Meet Martine Harris, a Haitian-American Speech Language Pathologist who is dedicated to servicing children and families in underserved communities, globally. She is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Travel and Give (TAG).
This is an organization that has worked diligently to provide speech and language services in countries such as Haiti and Kenya where access to services are limited. Their work spans clinical practice, community outreach and global partnerships focused on equity and access.
The World Report on Disability (WHO, 2011) estimates that more than a billion people live with disability. This includes 95 million children (Staley, et al 2021).
For these communities, access to services is often limited due to a lack of knowledge and awareness, religious belief, stigma, technology, transportation, trained personnel and finances. As a result, many children are kept within the home—often without education or services—until their late elementary years.
TAG works to provide theratherapy services by supporting schools such as the Almasi school. It’s an opportunity that I had a chance to experience first hand with the team in Nairobi, Kenya.
Travel and Give continues to do amazing work to expand, not only speech services but also mental health services for families.
Access Matters!
